How Proactive Should One Be?

I'm a middle-aged student teacher with children, and it's hard these days! I feel I'm getting mixed messages. I'm constantly told to "go jump in there" and say what I want to do, but I feel like my cooperating teacher is very controlling of the curriculum. It's almost like a no-win situation. It feels like the only time I'm offered to do a lesson is when I haven't prepared anything.

I don't know. I'm feeling paranoid and it's the stressful end of the year. I can't figure out how much of student teaching is going for it when you feel like you're stepping on people's toes. Could this be coming out of the old "office mentally" I have where you have to be wary about "stealing somebody's thunder?"
